Shimmering like peacock feathers with an almost magical iridescence, this remarkable carpet is based on a 17th century ”Polish” design made at the Persian court manufactory of Kashan. Formerly in an Imperial collection, the original is a museum piece knotted in silk brocade on cotton. Its hexagonal middle panel enclosed by arabesques was executed in twelve colors with a general light tone. While faded by time, its beauty is the inspiration for this resplendent carpet which presents a luxurious field of blues ranging from indigo to lapis. Its traditional motifs include palmettes, arabesques and cloud bands similar to the original, with floral and geometric details finely figured in accent colors of ebony and ruby red.
